posticon Geocities boards going down... save Angora and Dozer...

Heya,

aye, I know it has been ages since I've been here - and I'm very sorry, only there's so much stuff that has happened and somehow I'm not really online that much unless it's for work and so on...
BUT I actually dug out my password and this address again, cos I got an email telling me that geocities is going to take down all their free pages on the 26th of October (I used to have one tiny free page at one point which never really took off - before the big Miss Cat page...) so they told me. Len has one old huge geocities page (the one with the soundfiles etc) as well, so I guess it's old news if I tell you now, but anyway - I was so sad to hear that the old pages are going to vanish completely - specially Evil Gnome's and Dozer's.
So if anyone wants to save any stuff from them they'd probably better clear out room under their beds and start collecting right away...
...and I'm sorry about vanishing for so long again and might pop in now and again if I manage...
hugs all round

Most books on witchcraft will tell you that witches work naked. This is because most books on witchcraft are written by men.

Re: Geocities boards going down... save Angora and Dozer...

Hello Cathy..

Yip. I got the email about geocities closing too and saved as many of my sites that I could find (or even remember?).
I used a freeware application called 'Web Reaper' http://www.webreaper.net/, that captures all files (images, html pages, sound and video) on a website and saves them to your hard drive with all the links intact.
I forgot about Angora and Dozers site.

Geocities as a website hosting service has been dead in the water for several years really..
The decline started when Yahoo took them over.. They never kept up with other free web hosting services, and their miniscule bandwidth allowances were a bit of a joke..
At the same time, the cost of 'pay' webhosting has dropped to the point where you can now host a PHP forum style site with moderate traffic, MySQL database and all the bells and whistles for under $7 per month..
So Geocities sites became sort of quaint, archaic reminder of the late-90's internet era..
When you stumble into a Geocities site now from a google search, it's like entering a time warp.. dead links, broken images.. sites last updated nearly a decade ago.

It's sad really.. because just about everyone's first site in the late 90's was a geocities site.

Static Websites are pretty much obsolete now anyway.. people want to get info fast and be able to interact with each other now..
Blogs, IM, video and forums surpassed the basic passive One Subject text and image based website long ago..

I'll try and grab the other WW sites if I can.. The Auntie's site is worth saving even if only for Angora's one-liners alone..
