Hero dogs honoured in Toronto..

The Purina Canadian Hall Of Fame Awards

Courageous canines enter hall of fame

Corey, a miniature schnauzer, dragged his owner down the street and found 80-year-old Jack Turner who had fallen into freezing water.

JACK TURNER, saved by Corey the schnauzer

Five furry heroes get Purina's red-carpet treatment in recognition of their lifesaving paws for effect
May 06, 2008 04:30 AM

Jay Sobel was enjoying a walk with his dog Corey when the miniature schnauzer began furiously tugging on his leash, pulling them far off their normal route and down the street to a life-or-death situation.
There, Jack Turner was trapped in his icy cold pool and his strength was failing. Fortunately his weakened cries had reached some acutely sensitive ears – Corey's.
Turner, 80 and not a good swimmer, had been puttering in his North York yard last May when he fell into the uncovered pool.
"I bent over to do something at the side of the pool ... next thing I know I'm in the water," he said. "I guess I just blacked out for a moment ... I got over to the edge and just hung on with my fingertips."
Weakened by emphysema and his wet clothing, Turner was unable to pull himself out. After 20 minutes, Turner's hands were bloodied from trying to claw out and he was in danger of going under.
"I was yelling my head off, but there was nobody around," Turner said. "All of a sudden Jay and Corey appeared at the back gate."
Sobel pulled Turner from the pool and called for help. Turner was treated for a mild heart attack, badly scraped hands, hypothermia and shortness of breath.
Yesterday, Turner was on hand as Corey and four other dogs joined the Purina Animal Hall of Fame. In its 40th year, the hall has inducted 138 animals since 1968: 114 dogs, 23 cats and one horse.

Yesterday's inductees each got a speech, video homage and red-carpet walk in the Capitol Theatre to get their medals. The owners got a portrait of their pet.

The other awards:

    * Maggie May, a Wheaton terrier pup, roused her napping owner so they could flee the carbon monoxide from a gas leak filling their home in Winnipeg.

    * Peeka, a 5-year-old Lhasa Apso poodle, frantically whined and scratched at the door to alert her Saskatoon owners to the presence of a newborn baby abandoned on their deck on a frigid winter night.

    * Once a Hamilton shelter dog, Missy is a 14-year-old terrier trained to react to medical crises. She so ably voiced her distress in the background that a phone caller rushed to check on the woman being tended by Missy – she had just had a stroke.

    * Freddie is a 3-year-old German shepherd; his adventure began walking with his 55-year-old owner across a frozen channel near their Coldwater, Ont., cottage.

The man fell through the ice and, watched by his horrified wife, tried and failed to pull himself from the frigid water.
But Freddie's leash was still wrapped on his wrist, and the dog gripped the leash with his teeth and pulled his owner to safety.
"It's overwhelming," said owner Mike Hambling, who credited a game of theirs, tugging on a toy, with inspiring Freddie's heroics.
Freddie was at the gala with bandaged hind paws after making an impulsive trip on an escalator. Hambling said his dog coped without fuss or sedation.
"Freddie just lay there and let the vet do whatever she wanted," Hambling said. "That's just his nature."

Kitties can be heros too. Here's some stories.
http://www.21stcenturyradio.com/articles/04/1116314.html
I've also heard about cats saving humans from a gas leak, a cat defended it's elderly human from a rapist home invader, a cat that found a lost child and a cat who alerted it's humans that their baby was dying from SIDS.
